One day after Washington authorized such assaults, Ukraine launched the first longer-range missiles supplied by the US at a target within Russian territory.
The BBC's US partner, CBS News, received confirmation from US officials that the Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) was being used.The Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine to the north, was the target of Tuesday morning's strike, according to Russia's defense ministry earlier.
According to the ministry, five missiles were shot down and one was damaged; the remnants of the damaged missile caused a fire at a nearby military installation.
Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, charged that Washington was attempting to intensify the war.
"That Atacms was used repeatedly overnight against Bryansk Region is of course a signal that they [the US] want escalation," he stated.
Furthermore, as Putin has repeatedly stated, it is impossible to use these advanced missiles without the assistance of the United States.
According to him, Russia would "proceed from the understanding" that "American military experts" were operating the missiles.
He stated, "We will be taking this as a renewed face of the western war against Russia and we will react accordingly," during a news conference held during the G20 in Rio de Janeiro.
The Kremlin approved revisions to Russia's nuclear doctrine earlier Tuesday, outlining additional circumstances in which the nation would contemplate using its arsenal.
It now states that a non-nuclear state strike will be seen as a joint attack on Russia if it is supported by a nuclear power.
